Over the years, many people around this country have decided to, or needed to, rent furniture from stores who specialize in rent to own or just rentable furniture.  When I was younger; and without many funds, I almost rented furniture myself.

The problem comes when the furniture you rent happens to be infested with bed bugs.  There are new laws popping up on the books protecting renters from the woes of bed bug infestation.  But, who is keeping a watchful eye for these types of renters?

Case in point…a woman in Colorado calls one of those rental facilities and arranges for bedroom furniture to be delivered.  The furniture is delivered and soon she is awoken to something crawling on her skin.  To her horror, she has bites on her body.  She calls the rental company and they deny any responsibility for the bed bugs. 

The company was quick to blame it on the apartment unit.  Sorry Charlie, this is a brand new building and nobody has ever lived there.  No bed bugs there, not in any apartment, except the one that the furniture came from.  The rental company refuses to pick up the infested furniture until their insurance adjuster comes out to take a look.  They warn the renter to not remove the furniture.  Now the entire apartment is infested as well, not just the furniture.

It was not until she contacted the media for help before she received an appropriate response to her new problem.  Once the story ran on the news, the furniture of quickly picked up and free fumigation services were offered.  What about the mental anguish to this poor woman?  Nothing offered on that front.
