NJ, NYC Squirrels – Why so Many Holes?
NJ and NYC squirrels are cute but they can easily ruin the looks of a well manicured lawn with all their hole digging. Why do they dig so many holes? One expert claims that during the Autumn season one squirrel can bury up to one thousand nuts. That explains most of the holes. However, if a squirrel notices a competitor like a human or a bird watching them they will create fake nut stashes in the ground in order to disappoint the nut stealer’s. They hope the thieves will stopping looking in their holes for tasty nuts.
By the way, besides eating nuts NJ and NYC squirrels enjoy fruits, vegetables, grains, mushrooms, flower bulbs and sap from trees. One expert claims a squirrel eats about two pounds of food per week yet he claims they weigh only one and a quarter pounds. If that ‘s true, most NJ and NYC residents would happily trade metabolisms with their local squirrel.
NJ and NYC squirrels typically have two nests (called dreys). They have a summer nest and a winter nest . The winter nest has a heavier lining to keep them nice and warm. The spend less time making holes and more time napping in the winter.
