Bed bugs are found all over NYC. You can find them in Brooklyn, the Bronx, Queens and in Manhattan. They’re living in homes, hotels, apartment buildings and anywhere humans hang out. They have also invaded schools all over the nation. The NYC city council has decided to create an advisory board to study the problems created by bed bugs and provide recommendations for preventing and treating bed bug infestations in NYC including in schools.

Bed bugs have been found in a NYC school in Stanton Island. If the bed bugs have been found in one school they are likely living in others and may not have been detected.

When some schools in the country find bed bugs crawling on a student they simply spray the infected student’s classroom and not the rest of the school. However, the bed bugs can climb on other students and the infested students often take courses in other classrooms and may eat in the cafeteria and the bed bugs spread to other settings. Spraying the whole school needs to be strongly considered for NYC schools that have reported finding even a few bed bugs in one classroom.
