Residents in Queens, Brooklyn, the Bronx, Manhattan, NJ and elsewhere may be interested to know that the recently proposed federal legislation known as the Bed Bugs Bite Act of 2009 would authorize $50 million of the Department of Commerce’s budget to train health inspectors on how to recognize signs of bed bugs. That’s a lot of money for human training. Perhaps some of the money could go to train bed bug sniffing dogs which are superior to humans at finding bed bugs.

People that have skin reactions to bed bug bites are typically very upset with the problem and hate knowing that they will be attacked night after night. However, many health departments don’t think bed bugs are a health threat and thus do not get very involved in dealing with bed bug issues. The health departments’ decision to be uninvolved causes the bed bugs problem to not be a priority with many regulators. Perhaps the regulators should be required to sleep on a bed bugs infested mattress for a week and then be asked if they would like to get more involved with the bed bugs issue. Maybe two weeks.
