Will New York Budget Cuts Increase Bed Bugs?
Budget cuts are being felt in government agencies around the country so it is not surprising that New York is feeling the pinch too. It’s no secret that New York has a huge problem with bed bug infestations in hotels, apartments, colleges, and homes. You can even find them in taxis, airplanes, trains, hospitals, jails, and movie theaters too. These buggers are difficult to eradicate and spread like wildfire! Being hitchhikers, you never know where you might encounter a single bed bug or a huge conglomeration of them.
It has recently been reported that the New York State Integrated Pest Management Program will likely be hit by budget cuts. Final decisions have not been made quite yet, but the program is on the chopping block unless state funding is reinstated. If it is indeed hit, the successful program will disappear in July of 2010. Besides helping New York farmers in many different ways, fighting bed bugs in New York is a top priority within the agency. New York City Council Member Gale Brewer, who chairs the Bed Bug Task Force, believes that it will be a mistake to remove this valuable program. You can help save the program by contacting your Senator.
