NPMA’s Bed Bugs In America Survey Offers Interesting Insight Part II Of III
• 49% of the people surveyed said that they are concerned about bed bugs in movie theaters. Bed bugs like to hide in dark places with cracks and crevices. Movie theaters provide ample hiding spots and in 2010, many theaters were hit with invasions from the buggers!
• 52% of the people surveyed said that they are concerned about bed bugs on public transportation. Bed bugs have been spotted on the NYC subway benches, in airports, taxi cabs, airline cargo holds, limos, and the like.
• 44% of the people surveyed said that they are concerned about bed bugs in retail stores. NYC bed bugs went wild for months 2010. I’m sure we’ll see more throughout the entire United States in 2011!
• 40% of the people surveyed said that they were concerned about bed bugs in medical facilities. Bed bugs popped up in many hospitals and ambulances throughout the United States. They are hitchhikers so you never know when a patient will arrive with the creepy crawlers on their person or in their belongings.
• 32% of the people surveyed said that they were concerned about bed bugs in their friend’s homes and at their work. A recent survey of pest control experts revealed that workplace bed bug infestation numbers are on the rise.
• Bed bugs are now found in all 50 states, with no real “hot spot” despite what some people believe. Bed bug infestations are almost evenly dispersed…17% in the Northeast, 20% in the Midwest, 20% in the South, and 19% in the West.
• Bed bugs are master hitchhikers so everyone must be careful to not bring them home with them when they travel. In the NPMA survey, 27% reported that they wash their clothing after returning home from a trip, 17% have inspected or vacuumed a suitcase after returning home, and 12% have altered or cancelled travel plans because of bed bug concerns. That’s a good start!
