New York City pest control experts say that many cities throughout the United States have continued to see a climb in bed bug infestation reports over the past few months.  Despite extensive education efforts by many government agencies and a continued media blitz to inform the general public about the nocturnal nibblers, it appears that many people still believe that bed bugs are part of an old nighttime nursery rhyme.  Nothing however could be farther from the truth.

Like New York City, bed bugs have been a particular hot spot throughout most of Ohio.  A few months ago, Terminix and Orkin, reported their top 15 most bed bug infested cities.  Ohio had 3 major cities topping the list for Terminix and Orkin.  Terminix ranked New York City as number 1, and Orkin ranked New York City as number 7.

UPI.com reported on July 5, 2011, that a new survey of Cincinnati residents has been completed by the Department of Health.  The shocking statistics show that 18 percent of homeowners have had problems with the blood thirsty pests within the past year.

Additionally, according to the online report, the Ohio Department of Health report included information that some paramedics “have been applying bug spray to some of their patients before transporting them to the hospital.”  Out of desperation to not spread bed bugs, many people throughout the United States have resorted to dousing themselves with a variety of dangerous chemical compounds to keep bed bugs from attacking.  Studies have shown that traditional bug sprays do not repel bed bugs.  If paramedics are spraying patients with chemicals prior to transport to hospitals, it’s likely that those sprays could complicate a patient’s medical circumstance.
