On April 2, 2018, a California family’s life changed for the better when a lawsuit filed in 2012 came through with a $1.6 million payout due to a bed bug infested apartment.

Hard Lesson to Learn

In 2012, the parents of a then three-year-old son and infant daughter became alarmed when both were covered with red itchy bites. Upon searching their apartment, the couple found a large bed bug infestation and reported the problem to the managers of the apartment complex.

The company instructed the family to throw out all of their belongings and then ordered bedbug treatment for the apartment a week later leaving the family to live with minimal conditions, which included sleeping on the floor. During this time, their son suffered from the itchy bites that caused him to continuously scratch resulting in bleeding and ultimately scars.

Days turned into weeks and the fumigated apartment and the bed bugs persisted in their torture. It took three months before the carpet was replaced, which finally eliminated the pests.

The family moved in 2014 and filed suit against the apartment complex citing the condition of their son, his scars, and emotional distress. The verdict yielded the largest amount in the U.S. for a single family.

The hospitality industry is taking a serious financial hit when it comes to bed bug infestations. Not only that, they’re taking a hit to their respective reputations as well.

Bed Bugs and Hotels

All it takes is someone posting to a social media account, leaving a review, texting friends, or giving an interview about bed bugs found in the room and the hotel is immediately on the defensive.

While no one wants to be bitten by bed bugs while they’re sleeping, there’s always a chance the person was actually bitten by a flea or mosquito and assumed it was a bed bug. This type of unfounded accusation can cause irreparable damage to hotels, motels, resorts, bed and breakfasts, hostels, and vacation rental properties.

When there is proof of bed bugs and the news is shared, the price of the room immediately drops resulting in the hotel losing money. Add to that the cost of litigation if the hotel is sued, plus remediation and treatment, the cost of inventory replacement, fewer guests and higher operating costs, and it becomes a costly situation.

Tips for Tracking Down Bed Bugs

Finding these tiny pests is like being on a case with Sherlock Holmes. There are plenty of clues the bugs are on the prowl, you just need to put them all together to create a case.

The Environmental Protection Agency is also a super sleuth and has a few tips to point you in the right direction. Signs to look for include reddish colored stains on mattresses, mattress covers, and sheets. Small dark dot-like spots are excrement. If you find small pale yellow skins, eggs, or eggshells, those are from the nymphs. Multiple bites are a sign, and there’s always the chance you’ll find live bed bugs.

Where you’ll find them is like hide-and-seek because bed bugs accumulate in more than one place. You may find them in-between mattress and box spring seams, cracks and crevices on the headboard, inside electrical receptacles, folds of curtains, seams of chairs, between sofa cushions, and more.

Bed Bugs: What You Really Need to Know

Identifying bed bugs can be a challenge as their life cycle is in multiple stages. A female can lay anywhere from 200 to 500 eggs during her lifetime, which averages 1 to 5 eggs each day. Her tiny eggs are white and about 1/20 of an inch long.

Once hatched, the babies, known as nymphs, will progress through five stages. Each stage requires the nymph to feed on a host’s blood in order to move to the next stage of development.

How long it takes a nymph to reach adulthood depends on two basic requirements: food sources (blood) and moderate temperatures ranging from 70 degrees to 82 degrees. The presence of these two conditions determines each bug’s progression, which can range from five weeks to four months.

As the nymphs transition into adults, the cycle continuously repeats itself creating more bed bugs to hide in your home and feed during the day or at night while you’re asleep.
