EPA Weighs In on Bed Bugs – Getting Them Out and Keeping Them Out

What the EPA Wants You to Know About Bed Bugs
What the EPA Wants You to Know About Bed Bugs

The bad news; bed bugs are considered a public health pest by the Centers for Disease Control, the Environmental Protection Agency, and the United States Department of Agriculture. The good news; bed bugs are not known as transmitters of disease.

Bed Bug Basics

One reason bed bugs have increased is due to their mobility, which includes being adept at world travel. With thousands of people traveling in and out of cities around the globe, it’s no wonder the bed bug population has increased as the wily bugs stow away in luggage, carry-ons, totes, clothing and anything else that’s handy.

Bed bugs are also masters at hiding as they prefer dark and cozy places. Their small size works to their advantage as they find places to hide and wait for their buffet – served up by humans. They’re focused on finding handy hiding places that range from headboards and desk drawers to storage boxes and under mattresses.

Regular over-the-counter pesticides don’t work; only treatments applied by an experienced NJ pest control service can rid your home of pests so you can avoid red and itchy bites.

Using NJ pest control is the answer when bed bugs invade your home. Once these bloodsucking pests settle in, it takes professional techniques and equipment to get them out and keep them out. Model Suffers Extreme Bed Bug Encounter at Hotel and Sues Big

Close encounters of the biting kind are something you might expect to see in a vampire movie, but in reality, the biting can be the result of bedbugs. A patron learned this, the itchy and scratchy way, when staying at a hotel.

The Bed Bug Hotel

A NJ pest control technician was sorely needed at a California hotel when a model for Victoria’s Secret found she wasn’t alone in her room. She had unwanted guests for dinner and she was the main course.

Sabrina Jales St. Pierre booked a room at the Palm Desert Embassy Suites while visiting the city in 2016. Little did she know it would become a nightmare.

Ms. St. Pierre experienced severe bites over a good portion of her upper and lower body. The hotel manager denied having any issues with bed bugs and none were found when the hotel room was checked.

As a result of the incident, Ms. St. Pierre filed suit against the hotel property, Hilton Worldwide, Inc., for punitive and monetary damages.

This could result in a costly bill for the hotel brand in both a monetary payout and in the hotel chain’s reputation.

If traveling, find out what you can do for protection against bed bugs. If you have bed bugs in your home, a NJ pest control specialist has the knowledge and treatment plan to eliminate the problem. For information about both issues, contact Stern.

While all of these relaxing activities sound enticing, if bed bugs are lurking in your furniture you could be facing an itchy nightmare.

Bed Bugs: The Facts

If you’ve never encountered bed bugs, be glad. They feed on the blood of humans and animals. Although they’re not disease carriers, they can cause problems for those prone to allergic reactions to bites.

They are savvy pests that stay hidden throughout the day and emerge at night heading to areas where food sources are available: bed, sofa, chairs.

Bed Bugs: The Signs

Since bed bugs are so clever at hiding, there are certain signs you or an NJ pest control specialist will look for. These include checking around bedding, mattresses, the entire bed frame, drawers in desks, chair, and sofa cushions, and behind framed pictures.

Other areas that may be potential hiding places include behind wallpaper, cracks in laminate or wood flooring, carpet seams or edges, and any cracks or crevices around windows or doors.

It’s bad enough that bed bugs are traveling on planes and trains, enjoying the views from hotels and motels around the globe, and setting up housekeeping in our homes, but getting into your dirty laundry has got to be the last straw.

Bed Bug Experiments

Researchers at the University of Sheffield have concluded that bed bugs are attracted to dirty laundry. Their research showed dirty clothes left exposed around sleeping areas was a green light for bed bugs to infiltrate the area.

Two experiments were conducted to determine the effects soiled clothing had on the pests. Two rooms were set up, each had four bags of laundry; two clean and two dirty. One room also had carbon dioxide added to simulate a breathing human.

The experiments showed dirty laundry saw an influx of bed bug activity. It also concluded the room with the added carbon dioxide saw an increase in bed bugs prowling for a human host.

To prevent bringing bed bugs home while traveling, keep dirty clothing in a sealed plastic bag. At home, place it in the hamper.
