I’ve heard a lot of campaign talk recently, but nothing addressing the nationwide problem of bed bugs. Maybe a good campaign platform in NYC should be “Vote for Me to Put an End to Bed Bugs.”
Bed bugs are certainly a public nuisance. The fact that they won’t cause you to become sick or die only exasperates the problem really. If they were more than a public nuisance, more would be done by local and the federal governments to keep them under control. New Jersey and its new and pending regulations are currently the leader in the pack to get the critters under control.
Local as well as nationwide government entities are not always sure what to do about the growing problem of bed bugs and regulations differ depending on what area you live in. Infestations are not likely to be on the decline because of the lack of regulation and awareness in general. When reading information about bed bugs online, I am always amazed at how many people are not sympathetic to others who are fighting the war against bed bugs.
There needs to be more than just informational brochures about bed bugs provided to citizens. There needs to be rules, regulations and most importantly, action taken to end the problem everywhere. With increasing low cost and international travel, the problem will only continue to get worse. Everyone should be put on notice. It is only a matter of time, before you too will encounter these night crawling, blood sucking creatures and be singing the chant of “don’t let the bed bugs bite!”
