Continuing from the post on Thursday.
Bed bugs have had many names over the centuries. They have been called wall louse, bed louse, night riders, red coats, crimson ramblers, and wallpaper flounder. As hard as they are to eradicate today, they were a nearly impossible pest to deal with during the early years.
Just like today, bed bugs were equal opportunity biters. They can be found in the finest hotels and homes as well as the poorest communities. In early times, the wealthy had servants to constantly change the straw in beds and clean obsessively. The poorer communities suffered the worse because they did not have the means to fight the bed bugs. The end result was more infestation.
The earliest exterminator was found in Europe in 1690, but only the wealthy could afford his services. Bed bug elimination formulas were kept secret in early times, just like them are today. For centuries bed bug exterminator’s main focus has been on prevention. Companies were hired to inspect often for bed bugs and then get rid of early infestations. Of course they did not have as many chemicals or special devices of today that would aid in the prevention and elimination of bed bugs.
The worst piece of advice given in early times to get rid of bed bugs was to fill the cracks of beds with gunpowder and light it on fire.
