NJ, NYC, Wildlife, Rabies and the CDC

For NJ and NYC residents concerned about their families and pets getting rabies by wildlife, especially raccoons, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) along with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service signed the first North American Rabies Management Plan with Canada and Mexico. The goal is to improve the cooperation and the communication among the three nations.

In the United States an oral rabies vaccination program is utilized to prevent rabies spreading in wildlife including raccoons, and coyotes. NJ and NYC residents should be aware that rabies from wild animals can be transmitted to dogs and other types of pets. Raccoons, skunks and other wildlife often live in urban settings such as NYC. Urban raccoons often live in sewer systems.

CDC Director Dr. Julie Gerberding mentioned that although tremendous improvements have been made in combating rabies, especially canine rabies,  it’s still found in wildlife which puts people at risk.

Canine to canine rabies has been almost eliminated in the United States. Human cases of rabies mostly happens due to exposure to wildlife inflicted with rabies.

Will Protection Come To NY Or NY Workers?

City Council members in Cincinnati, Ohio want to put a stop to the spread of bed bugs post haste.  They have recently signed into motion an order for the city administration to protect their police and firefighters from the dreaded critters.

Police and firefighters have been entering homes to help residents whenever they are called upon.  One thing these amazing public servants were not banking on was having blood sucking hitchhikers hop on board their equipment and follow them to their work place and eventually to their homes.
 
More and more police and firefighters have been infesting their own families because of their public contact.  The same is sure to be happening in New York and New Jersey, as well as all over the country.  In Cincinnati, firefighters work at different stations in each shift.  The end result is that bed bugs are traveling easily between all of the stations and the infestations keep growing.
 
The new motion would have the City negotiating with a pest control company to provide discounted eradication services for all of their officers and firefighters.  All police and fire trucks would also be equipped with special bed bug spray.

I wonder if NY and NJ officials did the same if there would be a significant decline in the bed bug populations?   Perhaps it is just a pipe dream though.  Cincinnati boasts a population of about 300,000 while New York City alone has over 8 million residents.
 
Maybe after more regulation, protection from bed bugs will become a similar priority.  But then you have to wonder about all of the school teachers, social workers, and other city workers that also deal with people and unknowingly become infested.  What about these folks?

NJ, NYC Bed Bugs Soon to be #1

The explosion of the bed bugs population in NJ, NYC and all over the country has caused insect experts to predict that by next year bed bugs will be the number 1 domestic pest insect in the nation. Bed bugs will surpass cockroaches and termites on the coveted list. If we expand the cockroach population it won’t make the bed bug problem seem less severe. 

Louis Sorkin the renowned entomologist keeps a colony of bed bugs in a jar and lets them feed on his arm through a mesh on top of the container. Yes that sounds odd, but he is willing to make the sacrifice in order to get a better understanding of the critters and thus perhaps help the country come up with a plan to save NJ, NYC, America and the world from the dreaded bed bugs.

When the bed bugs sense his carbon dioxide and body heat they quickly go to the mesh and stick out their stylets and feed on his blood. Perhaps the feeding frenzy would make Sorkin a worldwide celebrity on YouTube. Even though blood mostly consists of water the bed bugs can exist on the blood’s small amount of proteins, sugar and minerals.

Notes From A Bed Bug

You might think that I am a horrible creature, and by human standards, I am.  I live in the crevices of furniture, picture frames, beds, mattresses, wallpaper, and floorboards.  I must admit, I can’t run very fast, but I am fantastic at keeping myself hidden.  I am about 4 mm long and look a lot like an apple seed.

I come out in the wee hours of the night/morning to dine on delicious human blood…yum.   Most people don’t know I am even around because I am so very sneaky.  I inject a numbing concoction (see I am nice) into my host and am able to dine in peace and comfort.  Once you awake, you will see the path that I took by the marks I left behind.  Funny enough, many people think my bites come from fleas and don’t try to kill me right away.  Within a short period of time, my friends and I can take over the cleanliest of homes or hotels.

Some people think I only live in poor areas, but that would be very wrong.  I like fine hotels and fancy New York City apartments too.  Those accommodations are always the best and nobody suspects that I am there until it is too late.

I love to hitch a ride on unsuspecting guests.  Finding a new home and new dining partners is always great fun.  Those kids coming to college are always confused about their new “itchy spots”.  Many of their parents forgot to tell them to keep an eye out for me, so they prove to be a tasty treat.

Most people cannot get rid of me unless they hire an exterminator and boy does that make me mad.  Don’t I deserve to live too?  Don’t visit this website if you agree as the people at Stern Environmental Group specialize in getting rid of bugs just like me.

NJ, NYC Bed Bugs – Huge Expenses for Hotels

NJ and NYC hotel owners with bed bugs infestations might be concerned about the cost of fixing their bed bugs problems after they hear what happened at a Days Inn in New Mexico. The owner of the hotel spent $63,000 in an attempt to get rid of the insects. “We are replacing everything” said Rez Chowdhuy, the owner of the building.

The hotel is getting new carpet and bedding. They are going to spray the entire hotel, and after an inspection they may spray again. Some NJ and NYC owner’s of bed bug infested hotels might not go to this extreme due to the cost. 

Six months or so after the bed bugs removal process is completed it will be interesting to see if the owner is rewarded with a bed bug free hotel or if some of the critters survived and the population reemerges.

What will the hotel owner do if a new customer unknowingly brings in more bed bugs? Does he have another huge stash of cash to spend. If I were looking to buy a business I don’t think I would be getting into the hotel business. Perhaps Henry Paulson should buy up the bed bugs infested hotels along with the toxic mortgages.
