NYC Bed Bugs – The Dangers of Bug Bombs

NYC residents should refrain from using bug bombs, also known as foggers, for getting rid of bed bugs. They simply don’t work on bed bugs and according to a report recently released by The Center for Disease Control, from 2001 to 2006 there were 123 cases of injury or illnesses in New York caused by bug bombs. Most were minor however a 10  month old girl was placed in her apartment only a few hours after the fogger was released and she died.

The common problems regarding bug bombs were people not leaving their home, staying too long, returning too soon and not notifying their apartment neighbors of the active bed bug fogger.  Also explosions can occur due to the bug bomb chemicals reacting with an open flame such as a pilot light.

Pete Grannis the commissioner of the New York Department of Environmental Conservation is trying to ban the sale of bug bombs to consumers. He wants to classify foggers as restricted-use products in the state of New York, which will allow only certified pesticide applicators to use bug bombs in NYC and the state.
