Rental Furniture With Bed Bugs

Over the years, many people around this country have decided to, or needed to, rent furniture from stores who specialize in rent to own or just rentable furniture.  When I was younger; and without many funds, I almost rented furniture myself.

The problem comes when the furniture you rent happens to be infested with bed bugs.  There are new laws popping up on the books protecting renters from the woes of bed bug infestation.  But, who is keeping a watchful eye for these types of renters?

Case in point…a woman in Colorado calls one of those rental facilities and arranges for bedroom furniture to be delivered.  The furniture is delivered and soon she is awoken to something crawling on her skin.  To her horror, she has bites on her body.  She calls the rental company and they deny any responsibility for the bed bugs. 

The company was quick to blame it on the apartment unit.  Sorry Charlie, this is a brand new building and nobody has ever lived there.  No bed bugs there, not in any apartment, except the one that the furniture came from.  The rental company refuses to pick up the infested furniture until their insurance adjuster comes out to take a look.  They warn the renter to not remove the furniture.  Now the entire apartment is infested as well, not just the furniture.

It was not until she contacted the media for help before she received an appropriate response to her new problem.  Once the story ran on the news, the furniture of quickly picked up and free fumigation services were offered.  What about the mental anguish to this poor woman?  Nothing offered on that front.

Have American Grey Squirrels Conquered Great Britain?

England is waging a war against a powerful American aggressor. No it’s not Wal-Mart greeters, it’s not dapper toxic mortgage hustlers; it’s the American grey squirrel. The report from London makes it sound as if a million of them recently hijacked a collection of cruise ships and landed upon the shores of Great Britain and rapidly invaded northern England and portions of Scotland. After further reading, a surprising piece of information is delivered; the invasion began during the Victorian era. After all these years they are now calling it a war.

It seems the combination of aggressive behavior, taking food sources away from the red squirrels by being able to eat unripe nuts and berries and carrying a disease which is lethal to the native red squirrels (not to grey squirrels) is severely lowering the number of the preferred red variety. The American grey squirrels’ population is exploding.

For the campaign against the grey squirrels, the government has gathered chefs who offer tasty squirrel recipes to help the campaign decrease the population of the American invaders. I wonder if NJ and NYC residents can offer any squirrel recipes featuring a savory or perhaps a succulent sauce.

Do NJ, NYC Hotels Have Bed Bugs?

There are several websites which mention which hotels in NJ and NYC and all over the world have been reported by visitors to have bed bugs. Perhaps these websites are not very accurate and just maybe are being unfair to hotels.

One of these sites has a hot list which features the hotels most reported for bed bugs and a prominent NYC hotel is on the list. The report does not have a date, it does not mention how many bed bug complaints were registered nor does it mention the rejoinder of the hotel to the accusations.

I have to wonder if these bed bug complaints were formally given to the hotels. Perhaps somebody got irritated with the hotel for having to pay a huge mini bar fee and wanted revenge by spreading an ugly rumor that the hotel is infested with bed bugs.

Even if the complaints are legitimate perhaps the hotel successfully eradicated the bed bugs from the facility yet I see know evidence at this hotel bed bug website that hotels have been cleared of bed bugs and safe to enter. If websites are going to monitor bed bugs at hotels they should do comprehensive reporting.

Things Are Looking Up In New Jersey

Can you hear the hallelujah chorus singing in New Jersey yet?  Residents of multi-unit apartment dwellings may be receiving a New Year’s gift based on legislation on bed bug treatments that has cleared the Assembly Housing and Local Government Committee and headed to the House and then Senate for vote in early 2009.

The new bill that has been sitting in limbo has just passed muster with the Assembly Housing and Local Government Committee panel.   The will bill forces building owners to keep their dwelling free of bed bugs.  If owners are unlucky enough to have an infestation, they are required to pay for eradication.

Lack of extermination can come at a heavy price.  The fines are steep and are meant to make building owners think about the tenants living situations first and foremost.  If an owner does not take action to get rid of bed bugs, than a $300 fine will be given for each apartment that is infested.  Common areas must also be treated or suffer the wrath of a $1000 fine.  Ouch!  The new legislation would also require building owners to distribute educational information by the State Department of Health and Senior Services and have annual inspections of their property.  The next stop for the bill will be for a floor vote in the House and then proceed to the Senate.
