The residents of Brooklyn, the Bronx, Queens, Manhattan, NJ and elsewhere might be interested to know that experts have stated that bed bugs do not carry diseases. An entomologist from Mississippi State University did claim that they are a nuisance. Perhaps NYC bed bugs victims would consider them more than a nuisance. Bed bug complaints to New York’s 311 number went from 13,322 in 2006 to 22,218 in 2008. Perhaps a large percentage of the people who called used words other than nuisance to describe the critters.

A Bloomberg article on beg bugs has some interesting information. One of the article’s highlights is the experiment with chimpanzees who were bitten by bugs that were fed by blood that contained hepatitis B. The experiment indicated that chimpanzees didn’t develop antibodies or the disease.

For now it seems that bed bugs don’t spread disease and let’s hope it stays that way. Scientists need to keep up with their research and make sure the little critters don’t evolve into disease carrying insects. It would be nice if they evolved into vegetarians who detested blood.
