A Mouse In My House Part I Of II

This is a true story!  Freddie, our sweet little kitten, has been camped out in our children’s playroom for the past three days.  He has been going crazy at night knocking over toys and climbing the shelving units as well.  I initially chalked it up to nutty kitten behavior, even though he had never acted that way before.  Upon one of my many trips to the playroom to find out what he was up to; I heard a strange noise, but quickly chalked the noise up to one of our four cats milling around.

My six year old daughter woke up this morning and headed to the playroom.  In a short time, she came running up the stairs yelling “There is a mouse on the TV and it is watching me!”  In my sleepy haze, I asked if she was watching “Mickey Mouse”.  “No, a real mouse is sitting on the TV watching me play!” she screamed.

I don’t like mice, so I quickly headed for the nearest chair to stand on…not really, but I was yelling “Let’s call Stern!”  My husband, not being the chicken that I am, went downstairs to join the cat hunt.

Something was truly wrong with that mouse.  Upon my husband’s arrival, there it sat, on the TV, eating a popcorn kernel that was dropped by the children the day before.  Filthy beast!

Please come back on Tuesday to see what happens next!

NYC Official Speaking at National Bed Bug Summit

Residents of Brooklyn, the Bronx, Queens and Manhattan might be pleased to know that during the EPA’s National Bed Bug Summit, Sharon Heath of the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene will be speaking. Her speech will occur during the session titled “How Public Health Agencies View Bed Bug Infestations.” The Bed Bug Summit will be occurring on April 14th. It’s good to know that someone from NYC is taking a leadership role in the dreaded bed bugs infestation that has spread all over the nation.

The agenda will include bed bugs basics, their impact on public and private housing, control methods for bed bugs, bed bug challenges and the governments response to bed bugs. This must be an important meeting since the owner of Stern Environmental, Douglas Stern will be attending the summit.

Bed bugs have indeed hit the big time when the EPA hosts a National Bed Bug Summit. I have not heard of a national cockroach summit being planned. I think the name “bed bugs” will be mentioned 138 times at the summit.

The Nose That Knows

dog-2It’s pretty cool when you get to watch a working dog doing its job.  Whether it is a drug sniffing dog, a bomb sniffing dog, a rescue dog, or a bed bug sniffing dog; the accuracy that these animals have is simply amazing.

Not long ago a family in New York was able to experience first hand how a skilled bed bug sniffing dog can spot bed bugs that would likely have gone un-noticed from their human counterpart.

The trouble began for the family when they began getting bit on their legs by something after returning home from a family vacation.  With the bed bug population on the increase in most areas of the world, they suspected that these tiny nighttime blood suckers could be the reason for the itchy welts.

The family called in a bed bug sniffing dog and to their surprise, the dog found four places where the bed bugs were hiding in their belongings.  Identifying their locations early, before the bed bugs could truly set up house, was certainly a smart move which saved a ton in extermination fees.

U.S. Bed Bugs Legislation Might be Good for NYC

The residents of Brooklyn, the Bronx, Queens and Manhattan might be glad to hear that  U.S. Congressman G K Butterfield of North Carolina will probably introduce bed bugs legislation this month. The citizens of NYC and NJ have the opportunity to contact their House of Representatives member and encourage them to sign on as an original cosponsor of the bill. The National Pest Management Association is trying to build support for the bed bugs legislation named “Don’t Let the Bed Bugs Bite Act of 2009.” Perhaps they should of said odious or disgusting bed bugs to ensure its approval!

The bill relies on funds that have already been authorized and existing initiatives which have successful track records. It deals with lodging facilities and residential housing. It creates a state bed bug inspection grant program to inspect lodging facilities. The legislation requires public housing agencies to manage bed bugs similar to their requirements of managing cockroaches. I wonder if any body is called a bed bug manager? Perhaps they get together for exciting festivities. The legislation will also allow preventive health and health services block grants to be utilized for bed bug prevention and control.

Can NJ, NYC Bed Bugs be Useful?

Yes, bed bugs may be biting people living in NJ, NYC, the Bronx, Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens but so far the bed bugs don’t seem to be spreading diseases. An associate professor of entomology at Mississippi University in Jackson stated public health significance of bed bugs is minimal. The associate professor and a colleague examined 53 studies on bed bugs that were published during the past 50 years. However, it does seem that a few of the bed bug victims had anaphylactic shock which is a serious allergic reaction, however it’s very rare.

The World Health Organization has stated that airborne common bed bug allergens that are released during bed bugs infestations can produce bronchial asthma. Well, the good news is there have been no reports of bed bug induced scurvy.

With all the bed bugs in the world it’s too bad nobody has come up with something positive to do with them. I have not heard of bed bug fertilizer, or using their carcasses to cure diseases or use them for entertainment purposes. They may not be spreading diseases but it would be nice if they could spread some joy. Perhaps just a modicum of happiness.
