Bed bugs, about 3 to 5 mm in size, may be small but what nuisances they have become all over the world. Nobody seems to like the little blood suckers. Oh by the way, they have three pairs of legs. The bed bug population keeps growing. Studies have indicated that the resistance bed bugs have to many currently available pesticides has strongly contributed to the estimated 500 percent increase in the bed bug population that has occurred just in the past few years. Perhaps after bed bugs figure out how to get taller they will take over the world.

The Bedbug Beacon a New CO2 Producing Inexpensive Bed Bug Monitor

The Bedbug Beacon

We’ve just been made aware of a brand new product called the Bedbug Beacon which is being tested and marketed by the same people who have brought us PackTite the portable bed bug oven.

We’ve watched a video of the trials and the product seems extremely promising in regards to capturing bed bugs when a visual inspection has shown no presence.

The product is a small simple pit trap covered with a dome, a tube extends from the dome. With water and three packets of chemicals, you make a liquid that slowly releases small amounts of CO2 gas into the trap; attracting bed bugs. The chemical solution continues to create small levels of CO2 for up to 11 days.

The results appear to be excellent with even these small amounts of CO2 in attracting bed bugs. The product will be relatively inexpensive and is patent pending. With the difficulties some people have of finding CO2 canisters to power many of the more expensive or professional bed bug monitoring tools, this ready-mix make your own CO2 solution may be the perfect combination for wide spread and also more economical use.

We are now selling the Bedbug Beacon in our online store with shipping anticipated the week of March 22, 2010.

Bed Bugs, Cockroaches, And Fleas, Oh My! Part I Of II

It has recently been reported that commuter trains in England are carrying more than passengers of the human kind.  A study from a pest control company there shows that cockroaches, bed bugs and fleas are having a field day traveling from place to place with passengers.

Tests were performed by spraying a pesticide inside of an empty train and a bus and then they counted the insect bodies. That sounds like a fun job to have!  The amount of dead insects found was absolutely staggering.  Reports are that the average commuter train contains up to 1,000 cockroaches behind lighting and ceiling panels, and 200 bed bugs and fleas in the seats! Wow, that’s a lot of potential infestations going on there.

Of course the train and bus operators deny that they have this sort of bug problem happening within their systems. They say that the trains are cleaned after each work day and deep cleaned every 14 days.  Just with bed bugs alone, a simple cleaning is not enough.  Even with a ritual deep cleaning every 14 days, you can just imagine how many bed bugs bite people, or worse yet, hop on people’s clothing and travel back to their home or businesses with them.  Bed bugs are master hitchhikers, it’s no wonder that England is suffering with such bad infestation problems!

Please check back on Thursday for the conclusion.

The Original Bed Bug Invasion of America

Some researchers believe that bed bugs originally came to America with the early colonists from Europe back in the 1600’s. Most people have heard the saying “Sleep tight and don’t let the bed bugs bite.” The saying goes back to the days of colonial America when they used to use a webbing of ropes to support their mattresses. They had to occasionally tighten the ropes and during the procedure they searched for the odious bed bugs.

Bed bugs seemed to have been totally eradicated in the United States about 50 years ago primarily due the the bed bug killing DDT. Since DDT was banned the bed bugs have made a big comeback. New York City is one of the nation’s primary spots for bed bugs. They are also living in New Jersey and many other locations across the nation. The horrible insects live in apartment units, schools, elegant homes, expensive hotels and other places.

Many pest control companies believe the bed bug problem is more severe than reported. Bed bug monitors are very useful in residences, hotels and various other settings.
