Spring Means Bees and Wasps Will Emerge Soon – What You Should Know

Sting Insects
Stinging Insects

The term “busy bee” is appropriate as the buzzing bundles of bizziness are at their peak as spring rolls in and temperatures warm up.

Bees aren’t the only flying pests that make their presence known during the hotter months. Wasps and hornets are also making travel plans to set up housekeeping in your yard.

Add fire ants to the seasonal pests and you have the perfect storm of stinging insects crawling or flying hither and yon. That’s why NJ pest control services are busy during the spring keeping yards free and clear of stinging insects.

Some people have allergic reactions to bee or wasp stings, This can be a dangerous situation as a sting could put them in the emergency room. For them, it’s best to avoid attempting to remove nests.

Some springtime pests pose health risks as well, such as mosquitoes which are carriers of the West Nile virus and the Zika virus.

Insects can also pose problems to property. Bees can build a hive behind the walls of your home or in the eaves. Carpenter bees destroy wood resulting in structural damage.

If you have a stinging insect infestation on your property, it’s highly recommended to call a NJ pest control service as they have the knowledge, experience, and equipment necessary to remove the insects safely.

Is Zika Already in the Metro NYC Area? Could It Hide Like It Did in Brazil?

Insect Facts
The Zika Virus

There’s a lot of talk in the news about the Zika virus in the United States. The disease carrying mosquito continues to make its presence known with studies now showing the virus started a year earlier than first thought in Brazil.

The virus is new to the U.S. but it has been around for many years. It was first identified in 1947 in Uganda. The virus was contained to that part of the world for decades, but as more travel options became available and more people moved from country to country, so too did the virus.

In the last decade, more countries have been affected, such as French Polynesia in 2013 and also in Brazil. The virus is spread by mosquitoes biting an infected person, then biting another person and passing on the virus.

For most people who are infected, there are no symptoms. However, for some there’s about a week-long period of not feeling good. The worse manifestation is the effect the virus has on pregnant women with birth defects and other health issues that affect their unborn children.

According to the CDC, the mosquito-borne threat of Zika virus ranges from the southern region to as far north as New England, where the mosquitoes – Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus – make their home.

Keeping your property pest free, including mosquitoes, is important during any season. With expert NYC pest control, you’re home can remain safe and comfortable. To schedule a NYC pest control inspection, contact our staff.

What Pests Can Reduce the Value of Your Property?

Pests that Can Cause Issues
Pests that Can Cause Issues

If you’re thinking about putting your home on the market, you may not realize there are certain pests that can impact your property’s value. While the exterior of your home may look fine, the structure itself may be damaged by a variety of insects.

Problem Pests

Honey bees are busy creating their hives and honey which is a good thing when being managed by a beekeeper. When thousands of bees choose to build their colony inside a wall, it becomes a sticky hive of honey, glue and wax.

Drywood and subterranean termites destroy wood and cause billions in property damage every year.

German cockroaches carry disease and require a strong extermination treatment plan to eradicate them from your home.

Fire ants are problematic as the bugs create ant hills or mounds where the colony, along with the queen, set up housekeeping. The ants can penetrate air conditioning, transformer boxes and electrical switches which can result in a power outage.

Carpenter ants are adept at creating structural damage. They are considered wood destroyers due to their ability to bore out areas in wood for living space. They’re also known for living in hollow areas and insulation panels.

Powderpost beetles have a penchant for hardwood. If your home has hardwood furniture, hardwood flooring, wood cabinets, solid wood doors and molding, these areas are vulnerable to beetles.
