Identifying bed bugs can be a challenge as their life cycle is in multiple stages. A female can lay anywhere from 200 to 500 eggs during her lifetime, which averages 1 to 5 eggs each day. Her tiny eggs are white and about 1/20 of an inch long.

Once hatched, the babies, known as nymphs, will progress through five stages. Each stage requires the nymph to feed on a host’s blood in order to move to the next stage of development.

How long it takes a nymph to reach adulthood depends on two basic requirements: food sources (blood) and moderate temperatures ranging from 70 degrees to 82 degrees. The presence of these two conditions determines each bug’s progression, which can range from five weeks to four months.

As the nymphs transition into adults, the cycle continuously repeats itself creating more bed bugs to hide in your home and feed during the day or at night while you’re asleep.
