Roaches and Mice, Oh My! More Restaurants in NYC Have Been Hit With Violations This Year.

The number of pest-related health violations in NYC restaurants has reached an alarming high. Nearly twice as many restaurants were shut down by city health officials due to unsanitary conditions in 2018 as compared to 2017. Eateries in the city were hit with 12,992 rodent and roach-related violations, a rise of 57%. The NJ pest control crew at Stern has the latest on this unappetizing story.

Who’s Coming to Dinner?

A total of 10,280 violations were linked to mice and 2,712 were linked to roaches.

Where are the Worst Violations?

Though all boroughs have seen a spike in pest-related citations, the highest incidence appears to be in Queens. Here, violations jumped 70% to 3,138 in 2018 – up from 1,841 in 2017.

Why the Rise?

Some wonder if the pest control crisis in our busy city is getting worse. Others ponder if the jump in pest-related citations is the result of more diligent inspections rather than an increase in mice and roaches in the area. To date, no cause has been identified.

Hope on the Horizon

Despite the rise in restaurant horror stories, 90% of the eateries in all five boroughs still receive A-ratings from the NYC Health Department, giving diners many safe options to grab a bite in the Big Apple.

Brooklyn Is The Worst Borough For Rat Sightings: What the Maps Tell Us About Rat Infestations

Which Cities are Bed Bug Hotspots?
Which Cities are Bed Bug Hotspots?

Most people are familiar with the fact that those who live in New York City are frequently dealing with rat problems. But unless you live there, or have spent a significant amount of time there, you don’t really understand the scope of the issue. NYC rat control is a serious problem, but just how bad is it, really?

Rat Sightings in New York City

Between January 2010 and September 2017, there were 101,914 rat sightings that were reported. That phrase, that were reported, is key because so many of them go unreported to the city. Therefore, we can conclude that there were actually many more sightings that occurred. What’s even worse is that between these two time periods, there was an increase of 63%. That’s a lot!

On top of that, most of the rat sightings occurred in buildings that housed three or more families. Commercial buildings are not as common for rat infestations, which comes as quite a surprise.

Brooklyn – A Rat’s Safe Haven

According to the latest heat map visualization, Brooklyn is where rats are most often found. But that doesn’t mean the rest of the city is immune to them. They are plentiful, and found just about everywhere.

Traps, Poison, Dry Ice – Now There’s New York’s Newest Method To Control Rat Infestations: Drowning

If you live in New York, you’re no stranger to rats. They seem to be everywhere, and they pop up in restaurants, in the streets, and even on the subway. Over the years, there have been many attempts to control them and decrease their numbers. But those attempts haven’t been successful.

A new method is being considered that involves drowning these pests, and there are those who think it just might work. Could this be the answer we’ve been seeking for NYC rat control?

The Newest Rat Trap in New York City

A man by the name of Eric Adams has come up with a rat control method that he claims to have great faith in. Essentially, the trap is nothing more than a bucket that is filled with a vinegar-like solution. The rats are lured into the bucket, where they drown. When Adams presented his idea, he also presented a bucket that was filled with dead rats.

There are many who discount Adams’ plan, claiming that the dry ice that was attempted a few years ago seemed to be a much better solution. But he disagrees. Time will tell if this pilot program will be implemented once the kinks are worked out.

Can Your Apartment Building Charge You For A Bed Bug Infestation?

Is It The Landlord or the Tenant's Fault for Bed Bugs?
Is It The Landlord or the Tenant’s Fault for Bed Bugs?

Your New York City bed bug control experts get this question a lot: Is it possible for your landlord to charge you if you get a bed bug infestation? The short answer to this question is yes, but it’s only possible if they find that the problem happened because you were negligent in some way. The chances of them proving that are very slim. Let’s go into this in more detail.

Proving Negligence After a Bed Bug Infestation

You probably have no idea how bed bugs came to live in your apartment, and truth be told, the same is true for your landlord. The burden of proof is theirs in this situation, and they have to prove that you were negligent. There are a few ways they can do this, such as:

• Indicating instances where you brought in infested furniture.

• Identifying and proving hoarding behaviors.

• Identifying hygiene problems within the apartment.

Proving your negligence would involve inspecting every apartment and finding them bed bug-free. If your landlord hasn’t done that, they can’t prove anything and should be made to foot the bill for the cleanup.

Tell Your Landlord
