New York City hotels are fighting a tiny menace that makes life miserable for guests. Bed bugs have packed their bags and moved in to some of the top hotels in the city.

The tiny bloodsuckers infiltrate bedding, walls, drawers, curtains, suitcases, tote bags, clothing, or anything else they can attach themselves to for a free ride to a new destination. Upon arrival the bed bugs set up housekeeping, then wait for the food buffet – which is the guests – to arrive.

According to a report from the Bedbug Registry, New York has experienced an increase in bed bug complaints of over 44 percent in two years. This is alarming as the hotels used for the report are members of the Hotel Association of New York City.

Out of 272 association members, a whopping 65 percent had received at least one bed bug complaint. Another 18 hotels had a total of 363 bug complaints which equals 42 percent.

Paramedics Finding Bed Bugs in Ambulances

Bed bugs have been a frequent problem at firehouses for a number of years. Firefighters pick up the blood-sucking pests while fighting fires in infested buildings. Bed bugs hitchhike back to the firehouse on clothing and equipment and infest bunks.

Paramedics are experiencing similar problems with bed bugs infesting ambulances. When paramedics treat patients living in an infested home or apartment, bed bugs can be transported into the ambulance along with the patient. The tiny insects may be clinging to the patient’s clothing or may hide in medical bags and equipment while paramedics are examining the patient in his home. When the patient is carried into the ambulance, the bed bugs come along for the ride.

Bed bugs will live wherever they can get a human blood meal. They don’t seek out pricey apartments but they will gladly live in one if humans are living in it. New York City’s Upper East Side has an increasing number of bed bug infested apartments. Unfortunately the value of apartments may be lowered if it’s known they have bed bugs. Upper East Side residents would probably prefer to be invaded by cockroaches than bed bugs.

When seeking a blood meal, the clever little bed bugs inject humans with two little tubes, one tube provides an anesthetic so the human victims won’t know they are being attacked and it also provides an anti-coagulant so the the blood will flow.
