Five Weird Yet Interesting Facts About Cockroaches

Cockroaches. These ancient pests obviously know how to adapt to their environment since they’ve been around for an estimated 280 million years and continue to be a challenge for commercial pest control services in NYC. With that in mind, here are a few facts about these durable pests.

Cockroach Facts

1. Cockroaches know how to party as they are attracted to beer and alcoholic beverages. Most likely, the sugar and hops tantalize their taste buds.

2. Cockroaches are tough to eliminate for three reasons; they have the ability to be submerged for at least 30 minutes and survive, have a 40-minute time-frame for holding their breath, and survive being headless for at least a week.

3. Three common cockroach species out of over 4,000 inhabiting the planet include the German, American, and brown banded.

4. While not providing food sources for cockroaches may seem like the fastest way to eliminate the pests, that is not the case. A cockroach can survive for at least a month without eating. On the flip side, they cannot survive more than a week without being hydrated.

5. Cockroaches in the U.S. average between 1/2-inch to 2-inches, while South America has the largest roach in the world, which has a 6-inch body and a wingspan that spreads to one-foot wide.

Setting Up House: Cockroaches Create Their Own “Neighborhoods”

Setting Up House: Cockroaches Create Their Own “Neighborhoods”

Are people on the Upper West Side really so different from the kids in Williamsburg? If we’re talking about the NYC cockroach population, the answer is yes. Research from Rockefeller University sheds light on the distinct genetics found in cockroach “neighborhoods” throughout the city.

Lead scientist Mark Stoeckle recently sat down with National Geographic to talk about the National Cockroach Project and what they’ve found in Manhattan, Roosevelt Island, and beyond.

Cockroaches, like New Yorkers, love their neighborhoods.

The Second Avenue Subway won’t be revolutionizing the commute for cockroaches anytime soon.

The National Cockroach Project has been genetically tracking cockroaches from all over the country, crowd-sourcing the critters from people who mail them in. Scientists were surprised to find identifiable genetic differences in roaches of the same species from opposite sides of Central Park.

Stoeckle likes to say that cockroaches have a lot in common with New Yorkers. They descend from immigrants, they have a lot in common with each other, but they do stick to their own turf.

What NYC and NJ Need to Know About the Oriental Cockroach

There are approximately 3,500 different species of cockroaches worldwide. Of these, about 55 are currently found in the United States. New York and New Jersey residents typically have to contend with German and American cockroaches. Another, Oriental cockroaches (Blatta Orientalis Linnaeus), are a problem and tougher to eliminate. They move slower than other species of cockroaches because they can’t fly. However, they’re highly resilient and very elusive. To identify and properly treat them, you need a thorough inspection by professional NJ & NYC exterminators.

The life of Oriental cockroaches

These roaches are often referred to as water bugs because they prefer dark, damp areas like crawl spaces and basements. During the warmer months, they’re most often found outside. During periods of drought, they move indoors in search of humidity. They will travel through sewer lines and carry the filth with them everywhere they go. Adult Oriental cockroaches reach about one inch in length and can live up to one and a half years. The males have wings but are apparently unable to fly. Females have small wing pads and wider, heavier bodies. Females will usually produce about 200 offspring during their life.

Oriental cockroaches are known to transmit forms of gastroenteritis-like food poisoning, diarrhea, dysentery, and other diseases. Cockroach Milk.. New Health Food Craze?

When you have a cockroach infestation, it makes sense to contact a NYC cockroach specialist, right? After all, how else are you supposed to rid your home of these pests. However, it turns out that cockroaches might not be as bad as we once thought; at least in other parts of the world.

A cockroach farm in China produces millions of these pests every year, and a recent CNN article indicates that the Pacific Beetle Cockroach might actually have more to offer than just headaches. This is the only species of cockroach that is said to produce milk for its babies, but it’s not milk in the conventional sense.

The Pacific Beetle Cockroach is the only species of cockroach that doesn’t lay eggs. Instead, it carries its babies in its brood sac, which is similar to a uterus. The brood sac produces a liquid that nourishes the baby cockroaches and it becomes a crystalized substance when they ingest it.

While it might sound strange, this milky substance has been found to have as much as four times the amount of protein as cow’s milk. Researchers are considering whether or not a synthetic approach might lead to better protein supplements in years to come.

Of course, you don’t care about any lactating cockroaches that you might find in your home. Instead, contact us, your NYC cockroach specialist if you’d like professional help getting rid of them.

Just in case you need another reminder of how gross cockroaches are, this viral video from Instagram user Martin James shows several dozen of the pests swarming out of a New York City subway drain to feed on discarded food. The video demonstrates why NYC cockroach control is such a daunting task. Where there is one cockroach, there is most certainly a lot more.

Roaches reproduce frequently and in large volume. They are able to adapt a tolerance to poisons about as quickly as new ones are developed. They have also learned to avoid some of the sweet tasting bait traps. It is no wonder they are considered superpests. The lowly roach is able to thrive in just about every environment on the planet and can be found everywhere in the United States from Alaska to Florida.

Although it is unlikely that cockroaches would be able to survive a nuclear blast, they have survived for about 350 million years and earned their reputation as resilient pests that are very difficult to eliminate. They do not just infest dirty households. You can be a meticulous housekeeper who never leaves a crumb on the floor and still suffer an infestation.

Call the experts in NYC cockroach control at Stern for fast, safe extermination. We will evaluate your situation and develop an effective course of action to protect your family from these disease spreading creepy crawlers.
