Access-A-Ride Workers Bite Back!

bed bugsAccess-A-Ride workers are steaming mad, and they have every right to be!  They have been enduring an unimaginable nightmare since the summer of 2008, and it is only now that officials at the New York City Transit offices are paying any mind to the trouble.  The workers been greeted each day by blood sucking bed bugs and have still been required to provide services for Access-A-Ride customers.

Last week dozens of employees took their grievances to the streets and rallied outside the office building in Long Island City.  Their demands are quite simple really…they want the building fumigated so that they don’t have to spend the day having their blood sucked!  Quite frankly, it’s bad enough when you have bed bugs at home and they sneak into your bed at night to suck your blood.  I can only imagine the horror of being awake and on the phone with a customer as you watch a bed bug travel across your desk ready to feast on a big ole’ chuck of skin.  YUCK!

One employee complains that she took bed bugs home with her to her apartment in the Bronx.  She was lucky; her landlord paid the fumigation bill.  He did not pay to have the bedroom and living room furniture that had to be discarded replaced though.  Access-A-Ride would not pay either, even though they know that the bed bugs came from their place of business.

Nobody should have to work under these circumstances.  It’s shameful!

If you are experiencing a bed bug infestation, call in a pest control expert who knows how to kill the buggers once and for all.  Stern Environmental Group has a huge arsenal of products and services that are proven to work to get rid of bed bugs.

Don’t Let The Bed Bugs Bite!

stern-bed bugSometimes real life drama plays out on television and it is just plain hilarious.  For the fans of 30 Rock, they were in for a treat last week if they viewed the episode called “Audition Day”, which should have been called “Don’t Let the Bed Bugs Bite”, in my humble opinion.  In the episode, Jack had a bad case of bed bugs which caused him to be shunned by everyone he knows. These “chew daddies”, as the show called them, were so bad that not only would nobody touch Jack for fear of catching bed bugs; but he was also banned from using the company car and forced to use the subway (oh no), itching all the while.

Many real life people have also experienced the same sort of discriminations that Jack encountered when they have a bed bug infestation.  If you ever browse through the internet and read bed bug victim’s blogs you can read first hand how people are ostracized by family, friends and co-workers once they find out that someone has bed bugs.  You can’t really blame non-bed bug victims however, because who wants those blood suckers in their home or business?

It’s important to remember that you are not alone in the fight against bed bugs.  Bed bug infestations can now be found in all 50 states.  They have plagued the finest hotels, cleanest office buildings and homes, and even a past President’s office.

If bed bugs are making you feel like a pariah in New York or New Jersey, it’s time to call in the pest control experts who knows how to get rid of the buggers once and for all!

National Pest Management Month

April brings many new things around the United States.  The snow is a distant memory, the birds are chirping, flowers are blooming, it’s getting warmer each day, and many seasonal pests are rearing their ugly heads.  It is so appropriate that the National Pest Management Association (NPMA) has designated April as “National Pest Management Month.”  This observance has been recognized for the past thirty years by each sitting United States President.

This recognition is greatly warranted because the pest control industry plays a key role in protecting people’s health and homes from significant pest borne threats around America.  According to Missy Henriksen, Vice President of Public Affairs for NPMA, “National Pest Management Month continues to be an important way to highlight and publicly acknowledge the hard work that pest professionals do day in and day out.  Protecting our valued customers’ homes and families is not something this industry takes lightly and NPMA is pleased to honor this important work with a month-long celebration.”

Additionally, consumers are encouraged to visit a newly developed online website that will serve as a great resource for pest information.  On the site you will find a podcast series where visitors can hear expert information on selecting a pest professional.  It is easy to download the information for free by visiting Pestworld.org and iTunes.  Consumers will also find specific information on how to dispose of Household Hazardous Waste on the site.

NJ Bed Bugs – Who Pays for Extermination?

Bed bugs in New Jersey are the responsibility of the landlords, however the law allows the building owners to pass the cost of NJ bed bugs extermination on to the renters. The city council of Jersey City is considering an ordinance that makes the building owners pay all of the NJ bed bugs pest control costs.

Perhaps Nicholas Kikisof the New Jersey Apartment Association has a point when he states ” Most bed bugs come in with the furniture.” He adds “Where it is known a tenant brings in an infestation it is that tenant’s responsibility to pay for that extermination.”

It can quickly get worse when the bed bugs invade other apartment units and dramatically increase the costs of  bed bugs eradication. It seems there is not too much sympathy for apartment building owners in NJ and NYC that have to pay for bed bug exterminations that sometimes are caused by irresponsible renters in NYC and NJ. Not all of the property owners are living the high life and have tons of extra cash to spend.

I am wondering how countries in Europe and other locations deal with the topic of who pays for bed bug exterminations.

NJ, NYC Bed Bugs Home Inspections

NJ and NYC bed bugs inspections are becoming more necessary due to the bed bug infestation problem in New York City and New Jersey. Residents can perform routine bed bugs inspections but they need to know what bed bugs look like.

It’s important to use the proper type of flashlight. Don’t rent a spotlight and don’t use a flashlight that is too bright because you won’t be able to properly see the small things. Experts suggest using a LED flashlight which uses a single high output lamp. Keep the light low to the surface your inspecting. Shining the light straight down will typically cause you to miss some infant bed bugs and bed bug eggs. If the light shines across the bed bugs you have a better opportunity to see them. Look out for blood spots and fecal matter. Yes it’s a disgusting task but you can do it!

Inspect all mattresses, box springs, couches, all upholstered furniture, suitcases, guitar cases, curtains, crevices, carpets, knotholes, screws in surfaces including screw slots and a ton of other things. Bed Bugs also hide in unique places such as cell phones and  computers. Don’t assign the bed bug inspection to your grumpy three year old.
