Cockroaches Want to Hang with “Friends” Too!

You Won't Just See One!
You Won’t Just See One!

Most people may not give much thought to the physiological mechanisms that drive the reproductive strategies of cockroaches. That is okay. Scientists at Hokkaido University are researching it to benefit all of us. By understanding more about how cockroaches breed and live, we’re able to constantly improve our NJ commercial pest control services and utilize only the most effective methods to exterminate cockroaches and prevent future infestations.

Cockroaches breed better in groups

The Hokkaido University’s research was recently published in the Zoological Letters journal. You should first know that those prolific female cockroaches can reproduce just fine for several years without a male. Scientists discovered that asexual reproduction in cockroaches is better when females are in groups. Isolated females take longer to produce eggs. Lead scientist Hiroshi Nishino said that the group dynamic promotes asexual egg production.

Cockroaches are seldom alone. If you see one, there are likely many more that you didn’t see. Cockroaches can contaminate food and any surface they walk across with bacteria like Salmonella. They regurgitate on the food they eat and will also defecate on it. They are one of the most common causes of year-round allergy and asthma attacks.

Cockroaches put the well-being of your employees and customers at risk. You don’t want your business to have a reputation as infested with bugs. Contact Stern Environmental for a free consultation and the most effective NJ commercial pest control services.

When thinking about things that are as American as apple pie, the last thing that comes to mind is cockroaches. Unfortunately, these ancient insects have been around for over 300 million years, which makes sense that they are one of the most common bugs around.

About Cockroaches

One thing about cockroaches that makes them stand out from the crowd is their adaptability. This has earned them the distinction of being extremely successful when it comes to changes in their environment.

Worldwide, there are over 3,000 cockroach species with over 50 percent making their home in the U.S. Some of the most prevalent seen in this country include the American, Oriental, German, and brown-banded species.

When it comes to size, the American species is the largest at 1-1/2 inches long. These winged insects are reddish brown with yellow edges at the thorax.

Behavior and Longevity

To find cockroaches lurking indoors or outdoors, there are several places to look. Cockroaches like areas that are dark and warm with an element of moisture. Prime places include floor drains, around bathtubs, inside clothes hampers, sewers, and basements.

American cockroaches are sturdy with the ability to survive without food from two to three months. They do require water monthly. Some of their menu items include leather, beer, and bookbindings.

Office Pest Control is Not for the Do It Yourselfer

When you have bugs or other pests in your home or office, it’s tempting to just take care of them on your own. There are plenty of do it yourself remedies available for pest control, such as over-the-counter products and methods that use common household supplies. However, there are several reasons to avoid these and hire an NJ pest control company instead.

Placing Bait in the Wrong Spots

One of the most common mistakes people make with OTC baits is putting them in places where pests won’t get to them. You have to know where pests are getting inside your office in order to use these products effectively. Otherwise, the baits you place be ineffective at getting rid of pests.

Ignoring the Cause

Getting rid of pests in one area doesn’t mean that you’ve eliminated them completely. If you have ants, flies or other pests, it’s important to find out where they’re coming from and how they’re getting in. When you know this, you can work on stopping them at the source.

Using Products Improperly

When you use OTC pesticides and other products, using them the wrong way can be dangerous to you, your employees and your pets. Pest control products need to be used safely and properly.

If you have pests in your home or business, don’t handle it on your own. Stern Environmental can provide you with quality services when you need a NJ pest control company.
