Drones Move in to Fight Mosquito Problems

Operation Stop Mosquito Is Now In Action, Over.
Operation Stop Mosquito Is Now In Action, Over.

Will state-level NJ pest control efforts soon take advantage of available drone technology to target mosquitoes and mosquito-borne illnesses? California is putting drone tactics into effect beginning this summer in hopes of gaining an upper-hand on the mosquito menace, and to further curb the spread of dangerous and potentially deadly pathogens including Zika and West Nile.

Lookout Below
Flying drones up to 400 feet in the air to spray the area below, drone technology has enormous potential for improved mosquito control, treating areas impossible to reach in the past. Cheaper and faster to implement than other mosquito control measures, it allows easier access to difficult terrain which would otherwise involve hours of difficult travel by foot or via amphibious vehicles. It also reduces environmental impact via more targeted control measures.

Scouting with ‘Skeetercopters’
Rutgers University is already experimenting with several mosquito control drones, including a heavy-lift hexacopter built on a carbon-fiber frame for less than $5,000. Its on-board equipment, which includes a camera, GPS, sonar, barometer, magnetometer, gyros, accelerometers, and telemetry to name a few.

Skeetercopter capabilities include aerial pest control measures, mapping of terrains, monitoring the weather, assessing water conditions, and surveillance. Capabilities also include intelligence gathering, such as trap setup and collection for the study of these potential vectors for disease-causing pathogens.
