What Diseases do Squirrels Carry?

Make Sure Squirrels Don’t Bite You!

Squirrels are cute, furry and cuddly, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be a nuisance. They often find their way inside homes as the weather gets colder in the late fall and winter seasons. Not only can they cause problems in your home, but they can also carry diseases. As your Long Island squirrel specialists, we want you to be aware of the dangers of these pests.

Squirrels and the Diseases They Carry

If you have squirrels living your attic, or other parts of your home, your entire family could be at risk. You could contract:

• Salmonellosis

• Lyme Disease

• Rabies

• Leptospirosis

• Tularemia

Most people don’t realize how dangerous squirrels can be. You also may not know if a squirrel is carrying a disease until you get bit by one.

Leave Squirrel Removal to the Professionals

It’s tempting to buy a squirrel trap and handle the situation yourself. However, this can also be dangerous. Squirrels can be quite vicious if they feel threatened. If one of them has a disease it can become even more aggressive and dangerous.

It’s best to let Long Island squirrel specialists handle any squirrel problems in your home. At Stern, that’s just one of the services we provide to our customers. Having a squirrel in your house can be annoying at best, and quite often, it can also be hazardous. Contact us to get information on how we can help you.

White Baby Squirrel Makes the New Jersey News

White Squirrels Exist?! Yes They Do, But They Can Still be Pests.
White Squirrels Exist?! Yes They Do, But They Can Still be Pests.

As any property owner who has had to have NJ squirrel removal services knows, these mammals can be major pests at times. Squirrels can damage gutters, spread parasites and cause other problems. However, these furry pests can also be adorable at times, as one baby squirrel in NJ shows.

Special Baby Squirrel

A litter of orphaned squirrels got some special attention last year when rescuers discovered that one of them was born with all white fur. Baby squirrels are usually gray, which helps them stay hidden from predators. One of the five orphans found in NJ had pure white fur instead, which is the rarest color for squirrels to be. This coloring results from genetic anomalies or mutations that also cause white squirrels to have red eyes rather than dark ones.

Life in the Sanctuary

The orphaned squirrels are being cared for at Antler Ridge Wildlife Sanctuary, where they are safe from predators and kept well-fed. This is important for the white baby squirrel, since it’s harder for squirrels of this color to hide from predators. Fortunately, this little squirrel will likely be able to continue living in safety at the sanctuary.

If you have squirrels on your property that are being a nuisance, our NJ squirrel removal services can help. Contact Stern Environmental to learn more about these services for your property.

The Damage Caused By Squirrels

When you see them scurrying around your yard, squirrels are pretty cute. In fact, you might even enjoy sitting on your front porch, watching them run around. What you don’t realize is that once they set up a nest in your home, they can do a significant amount of damage, including:

  • Chewing holes through cardboard boxes
  • Chewing on the wiring in your attic
  • Destroying your belongings
  • Leaving their excrement everywhere

Clearly, this is a problem, and you want to take care of it as soon as possible.

Squirrels Plague Chicago and Wreak Havoc at Park

Squirrel Overload

NJ residents who have squirrels around might want to take note of the problems these critters have caused in Chicago. An alderman in the Windy City was recently hospitalized and faces months of recovery after an encounter with a squirrel.

Out-of-Control Squirrels

Alderman Howard Brookins in Chicago spoke out against aggressive squirrels in recent months. Brookins complained about these critters chewing holes in brand new garbage cans on a regular basis. The Chicago alderman ended up being seriously hurt when a squirrel jumped into his bicycle spokes as he was riding in the area. He suffered several injuries, including a broken nose, fractured skull and the loss of a few teeth, while the squirrel didn’t survive the encounter. Although it’s rare to hear about this type of incident involving squirrels, it’s good to keep it in mind, especially if you have a lot of squirrels around.

What to Do About Squirrels

Squirrels can become a problem when they decide to nest in your gutters, roof or attic. These parts of your home can be damaged as they build their nests. Squirrels can also spread rabies and other diseases. It’s important to have an NJ squirrel exterminator handle any infestations you have before they cause trouble.

Watch Out! Did You Know Squirrels May Be Carriers of Leprosy?

Make Sure Squirrels Don’t Bite You!

Those cute little squirrels running to and fro, carrying and burying nuts, then running to get more, can certainly be entertaining. But when they make their home in your house or attic, well, they aren’t very cute anymore.

Besides being a major nuisance by chewing up woodwork, running around and sounding like a herd of elephants in your ceiling, or gnawing through wires, they can also carry diseases, and one of those is leprosy.

Red Squirrels

So far, only the red squirrel is known to carry the leprosy bacteria, and of those, only red squirrels in Great Britain are infected. There has been no known infection that has occurred when humans have been exposed to squirrels with leprosy, but that doesn’t mean it is beyond the realm of possibility.

The common grey squirrels, which are abundant on our eastern USA coast, don’t harbor the leprosy bacteria, but they can carry other diseases like salmonella, and they can also carry ticks that may be infected with Lyme disease. Regardless of what type of squirrel, it’s always better to keep them from making your house their home.
